Teaching Philosophy

As a teacher, I have the confidence that every Student is able to strive for success in their academic performance if time and means are presented as they need. In order to achieve this, I should try my best to motivate my students and develop their mind by employing creativity, stressing the importance of education as well as giving my students the freedom to think themselves and discover new knowledge. There are some teachers who presented their subjects in a way that it caught my interest, clarified difficult topics and led me through complex areas, where by utilizing the ability of thinking to the maximum. Those are few role models who persuaded me towards teaching. I just want to be better than those by making myself as a facilitator rather than an information expert who delivers simple content. I am always conscious about different learning styles and managing different behaviors. Feedback from students and from the experts who observes my lessons have been vital to the process of growth I have undergone since I began teaching.

I try my best to understand the needs of my students, their likes and dislikes. I believe a student can gain only if he she is willing to accept the teacher as a teacher. To achieve this personal contact with students is essential. I appreciate that each different individual is unique therefore any ideas, opinions, criticisms and suggestions from them should be taken into consideration

As I gained experience and confidence as a teacher, I moved into areas of leading teachers and school management. My current position as a Qualified leading teacher has led me to assist more in this field where I can have an influence on the learning climate and conditions of the school. I am able to help my colleagues develop as teachers .I have attended meetings and workshops to learn about this and am currently enrolled in a distance-education, Post graduate Certificate in Education course at Maldives national University.
I should be a professional teacher by showing professionalism such as good leadership skills for my colleagues and students.  In my opinion, being an authoritarian will only create a distance between a teacher and a student. As a teacher, I should be able to attend to my students’ personal and academic needs whenever needed.
In addition, I am trying to create a secure learning environment based on respect and caring instead of fear of a punishment. In order to achieve this, I must build strong rapport with my students so that all of us can learn in a conducive and fun environment. Similarly, effective communication skills are apparently an important key to an effective teaching and learning process in the academic setting.

I give importance to the needs of my students. In order to create student-centered learning environment, I should consider their abilities and skills. I believe that by creating a student-centered learning environment, my students will be able to take charge of their own learning with little assistance from the teacher. This will encourage them to have a sense of responsibility in terms of achieving their learning goal. I always tell my students the primary objectives of each lesson. This helps them to evaluate themselves and have a self assessment for learning. As a teacher, i always guide them to achieve their learning goals.

With the digital age, I try to keep myself in the right track by keeping my hands on the latest technology. Since Computer Studies is one of my major subjects I have to have a clear understanding of the latest trends in the technology. I also try to incorporate them into my classroom practice as much as possible with available but limited resources. I believe these are essential for everyone as they need to be aware of the technology, when they come out for a profession.  To make use of all these I need to be well prepared for each lesson I take. After Each lesson It is vital to have a reflection on it in order to be a better a teacher.

Last but not least, I encourage my students to explorer every opportunity and the surrounding environment to build a rich knowledge base. In order to achieve this, I would vary my teaching styles while at the same time encouraging critical thinking skills among my students. In my personal point of view, a teacher should use different teaching strategies and should take account of individual needs. I think that learning should not only be limited within the classroom where the only source of the information is the teacher. I try to show real word examples and make sense of what I they learn. At last my student will be competent enough to think and make critical judgements.

Cognitive learning theory

When we say the word “Teaching”, we usually mean helping someone (usually a student) to use the brain to think. This main concept of learning is the key viewpoint in the Cognitive Learning Theory.

Cognitive Learning Theory implies that the different processes concerning learning can be explained by analyzing the mental processes first.  In this theory learning involves the transformation of the data collected from the environment into knowledge that is stored in the mind. It is in other words making knowledge meaningful and helping learners organize and relate new information to prior knowledge which is already stored in the memory. Teaching should be based on what they have learned (prior knowledge) in order to build effective learning environment.
Cognitive learning theory can be summarized as follows

  •      Cognitive skills are underlying mental abilities and are not the same as just the academic knowledge obtained in the classroom.
  •    Cognitive skills can be changed and improved.
  •       Improper cognitive skills make learning difficult and annoying.
  • Specific cognitive skills testing is the best way to identify which cognitive skills are the cause of a learning problem and need strengthening.
  • With the right information and training in the right age, every child can experience learning that is easy, fast, and fun.

Cognitive learning theory can be divided into two major divisions; Social Cognitive Theory and Cognitive Behavioral Theory.
